The NBA will retire Bill Russell’s iconic number 6. Players who currently wear No. 6 may continue doing so, but the number cannot be issued again. Nobody has worn number 6 for the Celtics since Russell’s final season, 1968-69. The Boston Celtics retired Russell’s number 6 in 1972.
